Narvik and Ofoten Railway

As the first industrial community in northern Norway the town Narvik grew up in pace with the construction of the Ofoten Railway (Ofotbanen). Ofotbanen is 43 kilometers long, from Narvik harbour to the Swedish border.

The line has there connection with the Swedish railway network. Ofotbanen is Norway's most heavily trafficked line where the ore trains from the iron mines in Kiruna constitute the bulk of the traffic. The line is also important for transport of goods between southern and northern Scandinavia.

We are proud to offer the opportunity to take the train in this unique landscape from fjord to mountain, and with a breathtaking view. Ofotbanen is by some referred to as one of the most spectacular railway lines in the world. The train makes short stops at the stations Rombak, Katterat, Søsterbekk and Bjørnfjell.

Day 1

Arrival and check-in. Scandic Narvik is the Narvik's most modern hotel. The hotel is one of the tallest buildings in northern Norway and has an exciting exterior of sloping glass supported by two towers.

We highly recommend a visit at the sky bar on the 17th floor, with a panoramic view over Narvik and the Ofoten fjord (Ofotfjorden).

Day 2

Guided tour at the War Museum and Museum Nord Narvik. Narvik has a very strong war history, and the war museum portrays a dramatic history about the Battle of Narvik during the second world war.

The exhibitions portrays the dramatic events through pictures and plates, and in subjects like uniforms, weapons and medals, give a very good insight of the situation that Narvik and northern Norway experienced from 9th of April 1940 to 8th of May 1945. The main attraction at Museum Nord Narvik is the history of its local industry: iron ore, railways, Rallaren and the spectacular building of Ofotbanen, the mining company LKAB, the iron ore port, and shipping.

You will also learn how Narvik as a town has changed over more than 100 years. The museum is located in the Norwegian railway company NSB's former administration building, a monumental brick house built in 1902 in scenic surroundings. From the museum and the museum garden, we have a good view of the harbor, LKAB's facilities and large parts of the town.

Day 3

Guided tour with northern Norway's hidden pearl, the railway from Narvik to Riksgränsen (the Swedish border). Our local guide will meet you at the hotel by departure. We will take the train to Riksgränsen, spend a little time there and return to Narvik with the next train.

The train ride takes about 1 hour, along the fjord ascending eastwards towards the mountains by the Swedish border at Bjørnfjell. The view from the mountain hills is stunning. At Riksgränsen we have the opportunity for an easy mountain walk. The round trip takes about 4 hours including a short walk to the railway station in Narvik and back to the hotel.

Day 4
