Alta Winter Adventures

The northern lights town of Alta enjoys a good, dry and stable climate, with many nights with clear skies. To complete your Alta Winter Adventures we also offer Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, snow mobile safari and dog sledding tour. Enjoy this opportunity to explore the town of Alta. Alta has a modern city centre with hotels, excellent restaurants and a modern shopping centre. Presiding over the city is the Northern Lights Cathedral, a modern church built in elegant lines that were inspired by the spirals of the northern lights. Recommended time to travel: December - March.

Day 1: Arrival at Alta airport (ALF) – Transfer to Scandic or Thon hotel about 10 minutes away

Both hotels have a central location, by the shopping street "Markedsgata". They offer modern guest rooms and a generous breakfast buffet.

Day 2: Dog sledding day and Sorrisniva

Today you'll get to be a genuine musher! Pick-up from your hotel. As soon as everybody has changed into the warm winter clothes provided, there will be given a brief and precise instructions about how to drive a dog sled. When the dog team is ready, it’s time to enjoy the dogs, weather and nature. You drive in the forest, on the river and maybe up in the mountains. There will be a stop to enjoy hot lunch around the open fire. You have plenty of time to ask questions and we also have a few stories to share with you. After the dog sledding tour (approx. 6.5 hours) you will be dropped off at Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Enjoy the night in a room made entirely of snow and ice, almost like in a snow cave. You will be sleeping on real mattress covered with reindeer skin. We provide you with extreme sleeping bags and a pillow for the night. Woolen underwear is recommended. The temperature inside the hotel will be about -4 degrees. Toilet, bathroom and luggage storage are located in the warm building next to the Igloo Hotel. This is also where the cosy a la carte restaurant is located. Sorrisniva has a good location to see the northern lights.

Day 3: Igloo Hotel and northern lights hunt

Today you have a day to relax and enjoy the facilities at Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel. We recommend starting the day with a nice breakfast and a morning sauna (included). Afterwards you might want to check out the Ice gallery and Ice Chapel. The chapel is a proper chapel, which every year is consecrated by the Bishop, and is decorated with ice crucifixes and ice angels. Some 20 couples each year are married here by local clergy from Alta. The “ice carpenters” are the owners and staff; everyone is involved in building the snow hotel. Guests eager to know how the Igloo Hotel is built can thus get an expert answer. Transfer back to your hotel in the center of Alta.

In the evening the hunt for the northern lights will begin. You will be picked up at the hotel by an expert guide, a skilful and experienced tour leader. For the tour you will leave the town lights behind and become an aurora hunter. Depending on the latest aurora, weather forecast and local knowledge, the tour leader will take you on a trip in a mini bus until you reach a clear sky and good views for watching and for taking photos. After the exhilarating trip (4-6 hours depending on the aurora conditions) you will be driven back to your hotel for a good night's sleep.

Day 4: Snowmobile Safari

In Alta a normal way of getting around is speeding on a snowmobile, also called snow scooter. Driving at the enormous white mountain plains is definitely a feeling of freedom and adrenalin. With a snow scooter, you have the chance to see places you would never otherwise experience. The tour will take 2.5 hours. You will be issued a helmet, warm clothing and boots. You can choose whether you prefer to ride alone or with a partner on your scooter. Preparations also include a thorough safety check and transfers from your hotel and back. You must be over 18 years of age and have a valid drivers license to drive a snowmobile.
