Revitalizing winter package in Tromsø
Beneath the northern lights oval is Tromsø, a small city with an exciting history, lively atmosphere and a huge variety of snow and winter activities. It's in the winter time that the locals are at their most sociable, cultural activities and festivals are at their most varied, and the northern lights displays are most frequent. Tromsø is an exciting and varied northern lights and winter city that is easy to get to. In winter time there are several direct flights from Oslo every day. There are also direct flights from other internationas airports, such as Stockholm, Frankfurt and London. Hurtigruten ships call at Tromsø every day. A stay in Tromso can thus easily be combined with a Hurtigruten voyage.
Package proposal mid November to mid February: Accommodation 3 nights at hotel in Tromsø city center including breakfast, airport transfers in Tromsø and activities (overnight programme at Camp Tamok, whale safari and northern lights trip) as described. The spoken language during the activities and guided tours is English.
Bus transfer from Tromsø airport (TOS) to your centrally located hotel (about 15 minutes).
Whale Safari 3.5-6 hours (depending on the whales) on board a very comfortable boat (Catamaran). Pickup: Radisson Blu hotel at 08:50 hours. Included: All-weather suit, whale safari guide, hot beverages, cookies. There is no guaranty that we will see whales, but the chances are very good as humpbacks and killer whales come in to the coast to feed on herring during the winter. We aim to spend around 1.5 hours with the whales. The whales often come close to the boat as they are very curious, so be prepared for big splashes. The experience here in the North Norwegian waters is completely different from the rest of the world because the whales are here to feed and hunt, and they are extremely active. Remember to bring your camera, and you could take the shot of your life, not just of whales, but also other wildlife like seals or sea eagles.
Aurora Safari to Base Stations 5-7 hours (depending on the northern light conditions). Pickup: Radisson Blu hotel at 18:30 hours. Included: Comfortable coach transport, hot meal, hot beverage and cake, northern lights video in the coach, northern lights guide, advice for photo, access to photo link (Facebook) and warm suit. There are four base stations which are located in different areas, to cover different weather regimes. Here we have warm shelters (lavvo or other building), toilet facilities, campfires and benches outside. On each station there is a local host with lots of stories of local culture and history to tell. We choose the base station with the best weather prospect, hence the best opportunity to see the northern lights. If the weather changes and clouds move in, we check with our network if it would be better to move to another location. If so, we finish our meals, hot drinks and cake before leaving, then we try to find clear skies somewhere else. In these circumstances we will not go to another base station, but will be staying along the roads searching for a clear sky. We travel with comfortable coaches and every coach has an on-board toilet and dedicated guide. As the northern lights are a natural phenomenon, please remember that sightings can never be guaranteed.
Today we recommend you to check out the city on your own. Just a few minutes walk from your hotel you will find Polaria - with it's arctic aquariums and interesting exhibits. Just look for the building that looks like ice floes that have been pressed up on land by the rough seas of the Arctic! Another tip is to visit the Arctic Cathedral on the other side of the Tromsø bridge, with it's bold, modern structure and powerful glass mosaics. On the same side of the Tromsø bridge you the you can take the cable car up to mount Storsteinen, 421 meters above sea level. You will never forget the view! The local city buses go frequently over the bridge. There are bus stops close to your hotel.
Transport to Camp Tamok (75 min) (departure at 17:00 (5 pm) outside Scandic Ishavshotel). There is luggage storage facilities in the camp, please check-out from your hotel at requested time (luggage storage at hotel until departure for Camp Tamok) and bring your luggage with you to Camp Tamok.
Sami adventure: Reindeer sledding is the oldest form of transport in the north, and an ancient part of Sami culture. This cultural adventure includes trying lasso-throwing, the way the Sami people still today catch their reindeers. You will be driving in pairs, with one sled for each reindeer. To conclude this excursion, you will be served a hot meal.
Overnight stay at Camp Tamok. We recommend spending the night in Lavvu (Sami tent), an arctic experience in itself! You will sleep in winter sleeping bags, on top of several reindeer skins. Please note that you will be sharing the lavvu with other visitors (up to 12 guests in each lavvu), but you will have your own sleeping berth. Camp Tamok is a wilderness camp with simple facilities. Toilets and showers are located in a separate building near the lavvu tents. A set menu is served at the main lavvu in the evening, please inform us in advance if you have any special dietary requirements. Warm woolen underwear and socks are recommended for this overnight excursion. Fleece-wear is useful as a second layer. Warm outer clothes and boots will be provided if you don't have this. Camp Tamok is a perfect place to observe the northern lights, given clear skies. Skilled guides will be with you during the whole stay and make sure you are safe and comfortable. The activities are easy and suitable for most people. Overnight alternative at no extra cost: overnight in wilderness timber cabin (4 bedrooms and a loft) or aurora chalet (suitable for a couple). Staying at Camp Tamok can be very social, as you can expect to meet and get to know other guests from all parts of the world.
Dog sledding. Say hello to a bunch of barking huskies that are ready for action (but still very friendly). You drive the dog sled by yourself into the white landscapes, through the beautiful Vass Valley - an uninhabited forest landscape surrounded by mountains. You will be driving in pairs, one driver and one passenger on each sled, with opportunity to switch places half way. The trails you follow have a total distance of approximately 15 km. At the end of your trail you will return to Camp Tamok. There you will be served a hot meal in the main lavvu.
